Tokio Hotel Concert

Last week Wednesday,

I saw my favorite band Tokio Hotel. I have been a fan of the German rock group since they first appeared on US TV around 2006/07. They were in their teens then, and I was a preteen totally in love with what I saw. Ever since, I have been following the band, own all their English and recent German albums. Their first English album, Scream, is a combination of their debut album Shrei, (which translates to scream) and their second album Zimmer 483, (translation: room 483).

I never actually thought I would get to see them live. Because they are a German band and even when they did come to the US they were mostly in California or Mexico. As of recently the boys announced they would be doing a World Tour divided into parts. Their first stop was some parts of Europe or South America I can't remember. Anyway, they came this way and I snagged some tickets.

How was I able to snag like 75 bucks worth of tickets to see a band I've been ogling over since forever?! Well, it was all the boys. Tokio Hotel decided they wanted to do a tour based around the club experience and close atmosphere of a club. They said they liked the intimacy and the connection they felt with a crowd in a smaller space vs a stadium. Thanks to the boy's lovely epiphany, I was able to see them at Irving Plaza in Manhattan.

Anyway, enough chitter chat, on to the outfit!

P.S. I took pictures of them but they came out so shitty because of the stage lights reflecting back thus making it hard to take their pictures. But I was pretty close to them, about three rows to the front.

Reppin' the boys in their 2009 hair do's.
(They all have different hair styles now)

Mother Nature Princess

Took a summer Spanish class and aced it!
In celebration my mom and I walked around the pier and sweated like mad. We also walked all the way from Tribeca to the West Village. If you aren't familiar with New York you don't know how truly far that is but we've done it before so no biggie. The only hassle was trekking through the city in 90 degree weather.

Review Friday: Girls To The Front

It's Friday and I'm ready to drop a book review on ya'll.
This week I've got 90's fever accompanied with radical girl power. Okay, brief back story: I initially found out about Riot Grrrl from this all girls rock camp I went to at 16. They taught me a lot of things about equality with gender and taught me the real meaning of feminism. They were also big Riot Grrrl fans. A few months later, an art instructor I was interning with talked about the pussy riots going on in Russia and I told her about having some of their songs and I ended up incorporating them in my art project.
Anyway, how did I find this book? At the museum gift shopping browsing around. I saw the words Riot Grrrl and was instantly intrigued. I bought it, but never read it. Well this year I decided to finally finish it and I'm so glad I did.

You can buy the book here available in paper back and nook.

Plot
Ever heard of Riot Grrrl? or Bikini Kill? The 90's revival of punk feminism? Scratch that, feminism in general?
Yeah? You know what I'm talking about? then I bet you're interested in this book.
If you haven't heard of ANY of those things, I know you've heard of Nirvana or maybe even Mud honey. If so, you already have some knowledge.

Girls To The Front is comprised of chapters of the Riot Grrrl Revolution. Told by Sara Marcus in a story book/ interview way, she takes us through her experience with Riot Grrrl and all the other women affected by this time in history.
The book is informational but also entertaining. Once you get into it and start reading it's hard to put the it down. I wanted to know everything whenever I finished a chapter. The chapters are long so it feels like you're reading forever and it'll never end but it will- the book only consists of 13 chapters.
Girls To The Front is one of those gems that gives you an insight to a time in history that not many knew about. Further more, it does an excellent job of showing how society views girl's problems and the female body in general. It also opens your eyes to how the media makes us perceive everything around us.

Why You Should Read It
If feminism interest you, if the grunge area interest you, if you really want to know where Nirvana originated, if you want to have a sense of connection and be reassured that you really aren't alone in your struggles, read this book.
I argue that this should be in a feminism history class or a modern feminism text course.
It's that informative and original. I've never read anything like it and you can tell Marcus spent time composing everything together. There's snippets of Zines and flyers (all authentic) from the period.
It's also a perfect book for music fanatics and majors.

Conclusion
Open your mind this summer with this thought provoking read.
For more info on Bikini Kill and Kathleen Hanna, who she discusses in almost every chapter, check out Netflix for The Punk Singer: Kathleen Hanna. I promise after you watch this you'll get Grrrl Power fever. While you're there, make sure to check out Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer; a more in depth look at the gals of the controversial arresting's in Russia.

Dear Girl,

When you love yourself, nothing can bother you.
When you are truly content and happy, nothing can phase you.
When you have reached your goals and set new ones, you can never be jealous.
When you're complete with your journey you will be a new you.

I hated the way I looked for so long but now I am trying to truly embrace myself the way I was born. Before, I kept telling myself, " if I loose a few pounds I'll look so much better. I'll feel so much better"
I no longer want to strive for that; while there is nothing wrong with loosing a few pounds and working out frequently, I don't want that to be the reason why I like myself.
I want to accept myself at the size I'm at now. Size 12 sometimes 14. Size jiggly arms and belly chub; Size thighs rub together and squishy arms.
And even if I work out and loose those aspects of myself, I wanna still love myself.
I'm on a journey to love myself no matter how I look. To no longer cringe in the mirror when I wear a strapless dress or shorts.

This post is special to me because I am showing a part of my body I have been hiding since I can remember. Even in the summer time I covered my arms, but its too hot for that shit now. I've went out with my arms exposed 3 times last week and I realized, nobody cared how the fuck my arms looked. So here's my message to you the struggling individual who is on their own path to self acceptance: nobody cares how you look.  Nobody genuinely cares that you have arm chub, or belly rolls, or that your legs rub together. They're probably not paying attention and if someone says something mean to you, remember they are being petty to try and get a reaction out of you because they feel insecure. Everyone has mean thoughts from time to time, that doesn't mean you say it out loud.

Here's me embracing my big arms... and cute ass outfit
